What are you doing for God? Are you actively involved in God’s work?
Contrary to what most people think, the work of God is not some activity you are involved in within a church or ministry setting. Rather God’s work is what you are becoming as you are involved in any activity, whether or not it is in a church or ministry setting.
In other words, it is not what you are doing for God that is God’s work. Instead, you yourself are the work of God. That is, what you are becoming over time, that is the work God.
The bible says in Ephesians 2:10 that “we (not the things we do for God like preaching, singing, evangelism, prayer) are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. You are the work of God."
So let me ask you that question again: are you actively involved in the work of God?
Are you getting rid of anger? Are you becoming more patient? Are you growing in kindness? Are you showing more mercy, understanding and grace? Are you becoming the kind of person God intends for you to become.
This implies that you can be active in church and yet not be active in God’s work because you are not changing on the inside, you are not becoming who or what God intends for you to become.
It also means that you may not be active in church but active in your place of work or school and yet be very active in the work of God. How? Because you are changing right there at your place of work or school into the kind of person God wants you to become.
In John 6:28, a few followers of Jesus came to Him asking “what must we do to do the works of God? I am sure some expected him to say “resign your employment and sign up for full time ministry?" Some others would have expected him to say “sell all you have and donate it to the church”. Yet others would have expected Him to say “leave all and join me in evangelism and prayer walk to take over the land”.
But Jesus did not say any of those things. Jesus response was radically simple: “to do the works of God”, he said, “believe in the one the Father has sent”. In other words, come to Jesus and trust Him with your whole life. Believe in Jesus and believe Him to the point that you come to Him to change you from the inside and help you live life as God intended.
As we say at GLC, to do the works of God is to learn to be with Jesus until you begin to live like Jesus EVERYDAY because you have become like Jesus in EVERYWAY. That is how to do the work of God.
And so let me ask you one more time: are you actively involved in doing the work of God?
