We are saved by grace, and then, almost without noticing, we start living by works again. Learning to receive what we cannot earn is the doorway to real freedom.
Here is one of the quietest struggles in the Christian life. We come to God by grace, as a free gift, and then, almost the moment we are saved, we slip back into trying to earn our standing. It happens so subtly we rarely catch it. And I would go so far as to say that many of the things we wrestle with linger precisely because we have stopped living by grace and started living by works.
Works is the default setting of the human heart. No pain, no gain. God helps those who help themselves. We make money the old-fashioned way, we earn it. Those instincts are so deep that they seep into our faith without a sound.
How Works Sneaks Back In
Listen to how it talks. "I paid my tithes, so how dare hardship touch me." "I rushed out this morning without praying, and now look, I got a ticket; God must be displeased." "I haven't been reading my Bible or praying much lately, so I'm not sure I'm fit to lead anything up front." "If I do this and give that and behave a certain way, then God will finally respond." Nearly every time we think or speak like that, we are living by works, even though we were saved by grace.
But Scripture calls us to live the whole of our lives the same way we started: by grace. As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, Paul says, so walk in Him. Grow in grace. Paul insisted he not only was saved by grace but labored by grace, that it was grace working through him that let him do more than all the rest. This is the freedom Christ died to give us, and it can be stolen if we are not watching.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1
So how do we actually live free? We have to understand what grace really is. Let the word itself be our guide.
G - God's Gift to All
Grace is how God deals with the world. Everything we receive from Him, we receive by grace. No one but Jesus has ever obtained anything from God any other way. You cannot earn your way to God's blessings; you can only receive them, because all of them are gifts.
Grace is when the worst student in the class is handed the prize at the end of the year. It is when the least qualified person gets the job, and the most undeserving one is honored, not because they earned it, but because God is gracious. And what do you do with a gift? You do not work for it or negotiate for it. You simply receive it. This is what sets Christianity apart from every other religion and philosophy. All the others tell you what you must do to arrive at peace, paradise, or a good life. Only the gospel says it has already been done for you, and now you receive it.
R - Received by Faith
A gift still has to be believed before it can be enjoyed. If someone told the worst student in the class that the top prize was now theirs, the first hurdle would not be earning it; it would be believing it. That is why grace works only through faith.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
This is where most of us stumble. How can I believe that though I am so flawed, God has declared me righteous? That though I have wasted opportunities, He still means to do me good? Yet unless you believe it, you cannot receive it, and if you do not receive it, it does you no good. God arranged salvation this way on purpose, so no one could ever brag, "I made it because I worked so hard." Everyone stands on the same level ground before God. So the next time your mind whispers, "You don't deserve God's help because you haven't prayed or fasted enough," do not rush off to earn it. Instead say, "Thank God I don't have to. He blessed me in Christ before the foundation of the world, and nothing I do now adds to or subtracts from that." Then go and pray and fast, not to earn anything, but because you love Him.
Remember Mephibosheth, crippled in both feet, born into the household of the king's enemy, and yet given a permanent seat at the king's table, eating there continually as one of the king's own sons. He did nothing to deserve it; the king was simply kind. And Scripture notes that at that table, you would never even know he was lame. That is grace, and it is being extended to someone reading this right now.
A - Available to All
The grace that brings salvation has appeared to all people. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. So let me put it plainly: if you are in Christ, you are already blessed. You can stop striving to become blessed.
Think of Abraham. God accepted him because he believed, before he was circumcised, before any religious ritual, even though his record was far from spotless. Grace was credited to him on the basis of faith. And that same grace is offered to all. Whoever believes will be saved. This is not the private privilege of pastors or a special anointed few. It is for everyone. Which means you do not need a human middleman to be blessed by God; you can come directly and boldly.
Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

C - Comes in Christ
Grace is free, but it was never cheap. It cost everything. The law came through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ, and He is the one mediator between God and us. From the very beginning, God promised a Messiah who would crush the serpent's head, but at a price, the bruising of His own heel. That promise was kept at the cross.
He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
Picture it this way. Imagine a card that represents your life, marked up with everything you have done wrong, the regrets, the shame, the ways you have hurt others and been hurt. On its own, that card could never belong in a perfect place. But when you come to Christ and say, "I open my life to You and receive Your free gift," God places that card inside Christ, the way you might slip it inside the pages of a book. Now, when God looks at your life, what does He see? Not the scars and the failures. He sees Christ. That is grace, and imagine how it would change us to start seeing not only ourselves but one another that way, hidden in Christ.
This is why we cling to Christ and not to our denomination, our culture, our degrees, or our pedigree. One acrostic for grace says it well: God's Riches At Christ's Expense. If we could earn our way by good behavior, then the cross was a tragic waste. It is grace or nothing, and grace comes through Christ alone.
E - Extends Through Eternity
The results of grace go on and on. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Eternal life is not merely a longer life; it is the God-kind of life, holiness and wholeness and beauty and abundance, and yes, heaven itself. Grace is the gift that keeps on giving. Even in heaven, we will live by it.
In fact, the whole Bible is one long story of grace. Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Moses, David, Ruth, and Rahab, all of them are trophies of unearned favor. From eternity past to eternity future, grace is how God has always chosen to relate to us.
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
Isaiah 30:18
Will You Receive It?
So this is the invitation, whether you have walked with God for decades or are only beginning to lean toward Him. Stop trying to earn what He is longing to give. When you catch yourself bargaining with God, gently remind your own heart: no, it is by grace. And when you talk about faith with a friend who is quietly convinced they must clean themselves up first, you can offer them the better news, that God gives Himself as a gift, not a wage.
Live rooted and built up in Christ, complete in Him, free from the endless treadmill of proving yourself. That is what it means to stand firm in the freedom grace brings. You are already loved. You are already accepted. You are already blessed in Jesus. Will you let Him be gracious to you today?
